What is Myotherapy

Myotherapy is a manual (hands on) form of treatment used to treat or prevent soft tissue pain, muscle tension and restricted joint movement caused my muscle or myofascial dysfunction. Myotherapy uses evidence based treatments based on western medical principles of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics.

A myotherapy session will typically include a short assessment followed by deep tissue massage and myofascial release. In addition myotherapists can apply cupping, trigger point therapy and dry needling techniques.

The benefits of myotherapy are that it produces results fast, allowing you to get back life, work or sport as soon as possible.

Conditions that respond well to myotherapy treatment are neck and shoulder tension, tension headaches and migraines, sciatica, back pain, Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome, calf and Achilles pain.

How is myotherapy different from physiotherapy?

Myotherapy treatments are typically longer in duration and focus more on hands on techniques such as massage and cupping and less on exercises and rehabilitation.

How long is a myotherapy appointment?

Appointments can be 30, 45 or 60 minutes in length. We generally recommend 60 minutes for your first appointment to allow time for the initial assessment.

How is myotherapy different from remedial massage?

There are similarities between the two but the primary difference is that myotherapists use a much broader range of treatment techniques. Both will use hands on massage, but a myotherapist will also use dry needling, cupping, muscle stretching and more.
